Why Pilates?  Because the exercise method, developed by Joseph Pilates in the early part of the 20th century – known originally as “Contrology” – is meant to improve overall health- body/mind/spirit.  Pilates includes exercises for every part of the body and applications for every kind of activity; may be modified to suit all ages and fitness levels- from post-rehab to elite athletes.  Pilates has evolved into a very popular, efficient form of cross-training.

Just a few benefits shared by regular participants:

  • increases core strength, stability, joint mobility, flexibility
  • improves posture, balance, coordination
  • helps prevent injuries by addressing muscular imbalances, incorrect or insufficient movements and over-training
  • enhances ease of movement in daily activities (e.g. gardening, lifting children, hiking, dancing) and in sporting activities (e.g.  surfing, paddle-boarding, running, horseback riding, cycling)
  • increases one’s physical and mental strength and endurance – supporting stress reduction & injury-recovery

As Joseph Pilates – used to say:  “after 10 sessions you’ll notice a difference, after 20 sessions other people will notice a difference, after 30 sessions you’ll have a whole new body.”

BIO:

Colleen was born & raised on the West coast of BC. She recently became a new Masset resident, grateful to join her husband and embrace her ‘wild’, gorgeous surroundings, as she learns so much from all those welcoming her family into the community.

Colleen’s passion for Pilates is fueled by her desire to help others find functional movement through an intelligent combination of mind and body working together.  Her interest in the mind/body field began during her completion of a BA in Psychology (Uvic and UBC) and continued with Group Leader fitness certification and Comprehensive Pilates Instructor Certifications. Her teaching style is compassionate, direct, often collaborative and sometimes laced with humor and anatomical references.

An ongoing fascination with anatomy, movement and breath has led her to Thomas Myers’ Anatomy Trains and a variety of workshops, including Experiential Anatomy with Jane Ellison (Body-Mind Centering), Bone Rhythms and Imagery with Marie-Jose Blom and Eric Franklin.  It is Colleen’s hope that her studies will keep her classes current and inspire as she is inspired daily by the personal growth of the minds and bodies of those who graciously attend her group and personal training sessions.
