YOGA & CLAY WORKSHOP – SANDSPIT

Join Amber Faktor of Sunfish Studios in sunny Sandspit for a day of muddy hands and meaningful movement! You will handbuild an array of small dishes and use a variety of surface decoration techniques to express and explore our creativity. There will also be a mid-day yoga class with instructor Caresse Nadeau to stretch and reflect while the pieces set up.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners to pottery and yoga! If you already have experience with pottery, you may find some of the information repetitive, but I would still be more than happy to have you and you may still learn some new techniques for surface decoration! The yoga class will be adapted to suit the experience and level of the participants.

For those attending from Graham Island, the start and end time work well with the 9:30 AM ferry over, and 4:30 PM ferry back. You may also be eligible for travel reimbursement through the Moresby Island Travel Fund, details listed on the HG Rec website.

WHAT YOU GET:

  • 3.5 hours of facilitated studio time, which also includes all materials to make and decorate approximately 6 small dishes, as well as the two kiln firings and glazing necessary to complete your pieces.

  • 1-hour yoga class with Caresse Nadeau

SCHEDULE:

We’ll spend our day in the beautiful, bright art room at ALM School, first going over the basics of ceramics and then handbuilding a variety of small dishes and plates. Various surface decoration techniques will be demonstrated and practiced to jazz up our dishes.

Mid-day we will take a break and join instructor Caresse for a rejuvenating yoga class. This gives us a chance to move and stretch after a few hours of seated work, while also allowing our formed dishes to set up and dry slightly, which is helpful for some decoration techniques.

After yoga, you’ll have a bit of time to eat lunch, before heading back to the art room. Edges will be softened, colour added and finishing touches completed. We’ll also explore some techniques best utilized on dryer clay.

Our time together will finish around 3:30 PM.

Once the pots have completely dried, I will fire them twice and glaze them with a clear gloss glaze. Your pieces should be ready within a few weeks of the workshop!

WHAT TO BRING (for pottery & yoga):

  • Comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting muddy

  • Things to imprint into the clay eg. foliage, lace. (Some will be provided as well)
